Joost Smiers is professor political science of the arts, in the Research Group Arts and Economics, at the Utrecht School of the Arts, the Netherlands and formerly visiting professor Department World Arts and Cultures, UCLA, Los Angeles.
He has lectured on the social and cultural forces influencing the arts and artistic practices in New York, Berlin, Leicester, Ottowa, Helsinki, Toronto, Kiev, Paris, Turku (Finland), Bayreuth (Germany), Moscow, Arhus (Denmark), Brussels, Budapest, New Orleans, Caen (France), Vilnius, Lisboa, Amsterdam, Taipei, Rotterdam, Cracow, Grenoble, Munich, Vienna, Stuttgart, Surrey (GB), Grenoble, Coimbra, Odense, Trier, Luzern, Hanoi, Oman, Sao Paulo, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Oman.
He is a member of the AHRB Research Network on New Directions in Copyright Law, Birckbeck School of Law, University of London. He was a board member ERICArts, European Research Institute for Comparative Cultural Affairs and the Arts, and expert for the Council of Europe in Moldova.
