Graeme Counsel is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He has written extensively on the topic of Culture in Africa, and his research and publications examine relationships between African politics and the arts, exploring the ways in which cultural policies shape cultural expression.
Graeme gained a PhD in 2007 and a MMus in 2000 from the University of Melbourne, where he is currently employed. His PhD analysed the cultural policies of several West African nations, while his recent publications have covered topics including music and coups, research resources in Africa, and archival reports.
He has assembled an important collection of African recordings and his research has helped to recreate catalogues of early African recording labels. He maintains these as discographies at his Radio Africa web site, which also provides resource information for researchers including videos of African music performances. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in West Africa, and has worked closely with the local authorities at the national archives, radio stations, and libraries of Guinea, Mali, Senegal and The Gambia.
Graeme's research projects have been exhibited at Guinea's national museum. Among his grants are three Major Research Project Awards through the British Library. This funding led to the recreation of the complete catalogue of the Syliphone recording label and the archiving of over 9,000 songs at Radio Télévision Guinée in Conakry. In 2008 the Guinean government recognised his contribution to culture by awarding him the gold medal of the Palme Académique en Or and a Diplôme d’Honneur.
In addition to his academic publications he compiled and annotated the acclaimed "The Syliphone years" series of compact discs of Guinean music, released by Sterns. He has contributed to several other CD releases, and has provided commentary for the BBC, ABC, SBS, and African television, radio and print media.
Graeme has provided consultancy services for African governments. He is currently employed as the Centre Manager in the Graduate Centre at the University of Melbourne. He is also the Treasurer of the African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific and is an active member of the executive committee.
